Lyonsdale Biomass: Investing in a Power Project and Our Logging Partners.

Catalyst Renewables, the parent company of TreeSource, is an owner and the operator of the Lyonsdale Biomass wood-fired, combined heat and power (CHP) facility in the township of Lyonsdale, Lewis County, New York. This 19-megawatt facility produces electricity for delivery to the New York Independent System Operator and 15,000 pounds per hour average steam flow to Burrows Paper Corporation. As a CHP facility generating electricity and heat simultaneously, the project extracts more usable energy from the wood than creating heat or electricity alone, so it is much more efficient.

When we acquired the facility, it needed significant capital investment to operate reliably and efficiently. More important, the logging community that supported the project for years was owed significant sums in unpaid deliveries. Catalyst Renewables stepped in and distributed nearly $500,000 to local loggers. We continue to make investments in the project to improve performance and reliability, and that’s true of our loggers as well.

We provide small but meaningful loans to many of our loggers to help them secure equipment, repair equipment, and meet other needs. For many, this is an important source of capital that is essential to keep the business operating, and it provides Catalyst Renewables with a more reliable source of wood.

U.S. Salt: Helping Industry Get Off Fossil Fuels and on to Local Renewable Energy

TreeSource Solutions provides large energy users with a means to get off of fossil energy and use renewable biomass energy, like clean wood chips. U.S. Salt approached TreeSource Solutions to handle the procurement of 450 tons of clean wood chips a day. Though an experienced energy producer in their own right, U.S. Salt wasn’t interested in procuring wood for their project and saw TreeSource Solutions as a viable alternative with the expertise and financial capability to deliver:
• 450 green tons per day, or 167,000 tons per year
• Supply to boiler and steam turbine generator that provides process electricity and thermal energy required to make salt

Wood costs are significantly less than natural gas, which helps keep production costs down and provides U.S. Salt with a competitive advantage.
